A few notes about the torrent.

First: the torrent contains a single FranceVFR custom DSF that is not present in the regular demo install.  This file is due to a mistake made by me while building the torrent; the FranceVFR team sent me the file to test v10 compatibility and I stupidly used the same version of X-Plane to build the torrent.  My gravest apologies to the FranceVFR team for not being more careful with their IP.

Second: if you can’t execute the apps on OS X or Linux, it’s because the permissions are not set correctly.  I have no idea why that happened – the permissions are correct in the source files.  There are two ways to fix this:

  1. The easy way: delete the apps, then run the X-Plane 10 updater for Mac, Win, or Linux.  By deleting the apps first you’ll get new ones from the net with correct permissions.  Or
  2. The nerdymanly way: chmod u+x X-Plane.app/Contents/MacOS/X-Plane in the terminal from the X-Plane demo directory.

This will fix the app bouncing and then disappearing.

Third: for some reason the torrent won’t finish on some torrent clients.  I have no idea what that’s about, the solution to all three problems for the next patch is: I’ll build a new torrent and zip it into one big file.

  1. People with torrents that don’t finish should try rebooting their routers (switch router off and on again is fine). Torrents that don’t finish can be down to hash fails, and the above solution usually fixes the problem.

  2. The manly type needs to be clearly in one line all by itself preceded by the instruction to type it exactly as it appears — for us girly types.

    Congrats on the release.

  4. Using uTorrent on a Mac, I get the error ‘Error: Too many open files” at various times while downloading this torrent. Now it’s at 99% and I can’t get it to go any further as I keep receiving he same Too Many Open Files error.

    1. Exactly what happened to me (‘Error: Too many open files”), that is why i had to hold its hand for 13 straight hour!s, I on the 99% i gave up then like a “chariot of the gods I ran Ben’s updater’ and it cleaned up the files, “You art simply a genius Ben in putting that up, it took away the doubt of any missing or damaged files….pure brilliance.

    2. I’ve heard the “Too many files open” problem is due to an internal Mac file system or networking limitation. Mine crashed repeatedly at 99% so I had to use the updater method. That updater probably needs to go at the top of the Mac torrent page with an ‘urgent’ note.

  5. Torrent wasn’t finishing on uTorrent, I found on the web that I should try to use another torrent client and it worked. (I used Transmission, I’m on a Mac). Maybe this will help someone else.

    1. Stan’s suggestion worked for me. Was using a macbook with uTorrent to download the torrent and could previously only acquire about 25% of the torrent, then switched to using Transmission. Worked and downloaded in 20 mins – Thanks! Seeding now. Thanks X-Plane team, can’t wait to check this out!

  6. I had the same problem with the Torrent download (MAC) and, on advice from Laminar, tried 1. The Easy Way: After deleting the 10 App and updating it now works a treat. If you feel like a break from flying why not see what happens in my garden after dark (and sometimes during the day!! – http://vimeo.com/user7776733/videos/sort:oldest

  7. Ben,

The problem with permissions is quite simple – torrent (but also ZIP, RAR, GZip), doesn’t preserve unix file permissions. If you want to share archive, you can use TAR with GZip to create .tgz file.

    Regards!

  8. The Mac Torrent is an issue with the uTorrent client for Mac.

I have posted a bug report with them – basically the program is simply running out of file descriptors on 1 of the 2Gb pieces (which that 2Gb ‘piece’ encompasses a few thousand small files).

    https://forum.utorrent.com/viewtopic.php?id=109216

Not an XPlane issue per se.

Agreed – it would be fixed if the entire “XPlane 10 Demo” folder was turned into a giant .ZIP file.

    1. Users then just need to download 1 file (not tends of thousands of them)
    2. Might get some smaller sizes due to compression
    3. permissions on files remain intact (.zip preserves unix permissions).

    Cheers!

  9. My torrent doesn’t finish, message “too many open files” is it of any help?

Just frustrating, but congratulation for the work!

  10. Just a suggestion: use a .rar except in parts. You can attach a file with it that can diagnose any missing file piece and then update just that part. I have gotten large files (>5GB) like this through torrents and it has worked fine.

  11. Hello Ben, it seems that the updater don’t want to update the already existing XP10 demo folder (the torrent one)…

  12. Hi there. a few days ago downloaded the x-plane 10 demo and after all. I run the app and stops in the middle saying missing wav file (afterburner.wav) that is actually in the folder , and it runs as an audio file. Can you please give some hint ? . I downld. the torrent version running on a imac core 2 duo 2 gb. Thanks for your help

  13. Foget about it, found the solution on the .org with
    sudo chmod -R 777 “+ the whole folder” …

  14. Hey Ben! Demo works very good but I’m not seeing much of my 32GB of ram in use… Will there be a 64bit version anytime soon?
