You can update via the about box or the updater application.  If you update from the about box, the updater app may already be in your X-Plane folder, ready to use.

This build should hopefully fix any crashes and colored-triangle artifacts introduced by 10.02 beta 1; the smoke puff performance optimization wasn’t my best work.

Also your airplanes may have engines again, which is nice for flying, I’m told.

If you are getting a crash in 10.02 beta 2 but did not get a crash in 10.0, please file a bug ASAP!  (If you always get a crash, file a bug if you haven’t; we’re working through them.  But I definitely don’t want to go backward in terms of hardware support with the betas.)

Note: the torrent is still 10.02 beta 1, so you’ll want to run a quick update on it.  I’ll recut the torrent periodically, but I think it probably works better for everyone if the torrent can build up a bunch of seeders.

  1. I don’t know where to put it – so i put it here since it a bit related to patches.

First i think the new x-plane 10 is in some points are a huge step forward in home flight simulations – but there are a few things that really is a step back or just not any improvement at all. Here is what I think should be considered improved or added:

    1. Precipation is too simple – it’s just lines – look at some of the effect seen in other games where it rains – nice details on wind screen and a real sense of rain – try looking at Gran Turismo 5 for PS3, F1 2011 for PS3 or PC, coming rFactor 2. I don’t think it cost that many FPS since it’s mosty post-process effects but the result is fantastic. The pilot should somehow be able to see water/snow on the windscreen to get it look more real. Now it looks more like a hyperspace mode.

    2. It’s snowing but the grass is green – you really need season and weather based textures.

    3. Aircrafts at right airports – it’s weird to see a B747 at a small VFR grass-runway airport.

    4. Simply remove old XP9 airplanes – it’s a bit strange that some of the planes in the folder is underdeveloped – i think new people to XP10 will select the plane they like in real life – it could be 777, and then they see a VERY old looking model, textures etc. I think in a new game/sim there shoudn’t be old files inserted. They could be available for the enthusiasts – but better have only 5 great looking planes and then the rest should be removed.

    5. Buildings at default airports – it should be possible to make some kind of autogen on default airports so there can be some buildings – see the FS-series game. I think they base it on taxi-charts or so and just place a default tower, some gates, lamps etc.

    6. Trim the looks in Xplane. I think a good Game Art Director should be hired to look at the general look in xplane to get it more “trimmed”. Now the quality and way things are made looks too different – mostly when looking at the various planes. And then the general look can be greatly improved.

    7. Mouse look with spacebar or middle mouse. It should be easier to look around the virtual cockpit.

    1. #1 I agree 100%, rain in the crj-200 by javier is awesome, that is how it should be all the time, i thought v10 was moving away from tunnel vision like lined rain.

#2- seasonal changes will come, austin said this in his presentation

      3-of course, agree

      4- agree.

  2. If you need to stop the demo downloader in windows, then it will delete everything downloaded so far!

Slight waste if you have already got a few hundred MB.

Of course you can get around this by using task manager.

It might be an idea to combine the demo downloader with the updater into a single program, since the programs seem to be 80% the same anyway.

Perhaps if you use the updater as a starting point, and if it cannot detect an existing installation then it reports this and recommends placing it on the desktop etc.

    1. We are _not_ going to combine the programs. Here is why:
In the old days they were the same program. And we had a huge number of tech support problems where users would go to update X-Plane and instead accidentally download a new copy, then contact tech support (after a huge download) because their settings/add-ons/etc. were gone. Or better yet, they’d file a bug report that the add-on no longer worked.

Since we separated the apps, this has completely gone away.

The problem of partial downloads is a new one, brought on by slow DL speeds from the intense demand for X-Plane 10 demos. So we do need to do something less stupid in the demo installer – some kind of revert and resume, but I we can’t go back to one program.

      1. Thanks for your reply. Maybe there will be fewer problems once people start updating from within X-Plane.

If you do change the demo code, there is also a small bug with the updater. If you select quit you get the choice to quit or continue updating, but if you choose continue, it quits anyway!

  3. Performance is surprisingly good, great work.

OTOH “mouse look” cannot be activated using “shift-0” (was ctrl-o on XP9), view zooms in instead of switching to mouse look. Where can I file a bug report?

  4. Chris, when we install regular version 10 ( discs are coming ..*smile), it will not be beta web demo anymore but stand alone application.

If the X-Plane crashes before we can get to the About menu to look for upgrades, how will we get them?

    Cheers, Andrzej

    1. Put the disc in, install the sim normally. When it’s done you can grab the updater from our website and run it which will update your installation and fix your crash. Then you should be all set.

  5. Thank you, Chris. I assume that version 10 website will have the updater link.
In the future , are version 9 and version 10 websites going to be combined in one?
Now, it is kind of weird, you have to know that there are 2 websites to open the proper one.

  6. Really enjoying X-plane 10 so far.. cant’ stop starting it over and over.. lol.. flying at night is something else, and even taking your plane for a drive down a highway is a fun experience 🙂

My criticism is that the powerlines are a bit silly at times. They have a tendency of grouping, favourably on or near highways.. i hope there’s something that can be done about that.

Also.. is there a way to make the couds move? They seem to just hang there like static patches of cotton wool, unaffected by wind, storm, even a hurricane won’t butch them. I’m assuming that that aspect of the weather system is yet to be implemented.. it’d make it such a lot better. Also the aurora borealis looks a bit rediculius.. lol.. hopefully that can be changed in something a bit better looking.

    Some more little niggles:

    – We need more colours for the traffic (cars): everything is either grey or umm.. dark-grey.
    – Props need to be more transparent
    – The heat-blur effect needs to be proportional (it’s just on or off right now), and extend as more thrust is applied. I really do like this effect, but it’d be so nice if it behaved realistically
    – The silly little puffs of smoke generated by AI planes everytime they apply brakes need to go.
    – Sound for AI-planes
    – White and sodium streetlights. Right now it looks like it’s all sodium (orange) light. In reality, you’ll only find sodium lights near highways, while other lights are usually white)

Mind you, i like the sim the way it is, but this is just a little wish-list with things that would make it a little closer to perfection IMO. Keep up the good work!

Ok back to a bit more of nightflying.

  7. I don’t know about everyone else, but I need a feature that forces me to go to bed before dawn. I seem to be a little addicted….

  8. Glad others brought up the street lights. I am under the impression that the lights we see in the demo are simple defaults. Designers will be able to construct their own light fixures, select color temp and diffusion levels, right? If so, how complex could these lights systems get? Would a lighted football/baseball stadium be possible?

  9. FPS has improved significantly. Can turn up settings much higher. This game is amazing! Take that FSX 😛
