A new beta is out – 10.03 beta 1 – release notes here.

I guess people don’t really have .plan files anymore, but here’s what would be on my short list if I had one, now that 10.03 beta 1 is out:

  1. Crash bugs and artifacts. We’re still seeing some of these, particularly on old hardware; I am still working my way through these.
  2. Third party compatibility.  10.03 beta 1 starts to fix some problems with older planes, but it’ll take a few more betas to work through these – I still have a long list!  Thanks to the aircraft authors that have sent bugs in.
  3. Performance.  I haven’t had a chance to dig in hard on this yet, but I have been logging bugs with some of the complaints that have come in.  I hope to be on performance in a big way in the next week.

  1. Hi, not planning to fill a bug until you say you’re going to optimize, but I went from 24 frames to 12 with same settings from 10.02b2 to 10.03b1 🙁

Which makes this specially bad is I’m at lowest possible settings, on a C2Duo iMac. 🙁
12 frames is REALLY bad being lowest settings..

  2. I am having nearly the same problem as Francesco. I am on Ubuntu 11.10 64-bit, Core i7, AMD 6970 2GB, and updating to 10.03b1 cut my frame rate to less than half of what I was getting on 10.02b2. Even when I turn *everything* off/down, I barely squeak out 10fps. No AI, all graphics settings at mins.

I’d be happy to provide more information, if you so desire, because at this point, it’s not worth running.

      1. I don’t know if I’ll be able to answer the paused question with any certainty. Things have strangely improved…

I “started over” as per your other thread about troubleshooting FPS issues and slowly worked things back up. To the best that I can remember I was able to return to my previous settings, but now with increased FPS – I’m able to maintain 40+fps when away from populated areas (btw – I’m running 3 screens at 5760×1080), and dropping to ~30 when near populated cities, Seattle, for example. Both of these numbers are better than I was getting on 10.02b2. I would say that my various objects (trees, roads, objects) are all set to the “middle,” ‘very-high’ distance detail, ‘very high’ textures, ‘global shadows (low)’ and ‘complete’ water reflections.

A bit puzzling, but other than that short hiccup, each release has improved for me. Thanks for your hard work!

        1. Edward, are you using HDR and clouds? Just curious, I’m also running at 5760×1080 but with the aforementioned options, only get 13 fps at the runway and 9-18 fps (depending on clouds) when flying with 10.03 beta 1.

          1. Me too… My screen resolution is 5400×1920 (5monitors) I’m getting average 8-12fps with aforementioned rendering settings nearby KSEA with no clouds and no AI… i7 4.2GHz, 5870 Eyefinity. With such a performance it’s not usable. (with XP9 and total extreme settings super high eye candy (ok no lighting/shadows) I get 45-60fps with ease)

          2. No HDR, clouds don’t seem to matter much. Oh, and Ben, even though things are better, the FPS doesn’t change for me when paused, no matter what kind of graphics settings I’m using.

As I said above, things have improved, but I’ve noticed something else strange. As I re-start the sim each time it times me out, performance drops. That is, after a fresh boot into a minimalistic window manager, first time runing the X-Plane 10 Web Demo, 10.03b1, things are ok – usable, but not great. After the 10-minute time-out, I simply quit, hit ‘Up’ and ‘Enter’ in the xterm to restart X-Plane and my performance is slightly worse. Then worse, then worse, and so on, until it drops below 10fps again.

            Interesting…

(This will be my last post here on this topic unless further requested. I’ll look to more official channels or post findings on my own site for more details in the future.)

  3. with dvd arriving soon, would it be a good idea to fully update or hold off based on comments above regarding drops in frame rates?
