Here’s another thing that’s new in 10.10: safe mode on startup.

One of the most common sources of tech support is users who can’t start X-Plane because their previous rendering settings crash the sim when restarted.  This often happens from maxing out system VRAM or process address space, but it can also happen due to driver incompatibility.  The problem that hoses users is that the setting change takes effect on restart, causing a “lock-out” condition.

X-Plane 10.10 knows if it shut down cleanly or crashed; if upon start, it realizes that it crashed, it will offer to run with default rendering settings.  This makes it easy to restart an rebuild rendering settings without losing all preferences.

This is not a replacement for improvements in rendering engine stability and 64-bit but it should help for now and will always help for edge cases where a particular hardware combination crashes in a way we’ve never seen.

  1. The safe mode is an excellent idea. Many times I have battled with the startup after my over zealous rendering choices.

    Many thanks Ben

  2. hi, you are doing a good job with your team, but my cuestion is when will be released the new 10.10? i don´t want to feel pressured or harassed, is only curiosity

  3. Dang, I know what setting I changed to trigger the crash and just go into the preference file to dial it back one and get back to where I once belonged. Now I’m going to have to take a snapshot of the RO.

One question regarding the use of aliases: only for scenery and not, say, aircraft or anything else? I suppose the first thing I’ll stick in the system SSD will be HD mesh files.

  4. It’s uploading .. Sweet! Good thing I just got off work! Can’t wait to sample you guys hard work!
Should we be looking for a new updater? I know my copy of xpx has not been able to make contact with the mothership for sometime.( can’t make a connection via the about screen)
Will the crash reporting system be up and going?

Good luck with all the after the 4th ‘fireworks’ once this update goes live.

For all y’all do, This buds for you!

    Simunut!

  5. Is there a command line switch for Safe Mode?

Since installing 10.10b1, X-Plane crashes each and ever start. I only get to the Crash Reporter and are never offered Safe Mode. X-Plane is simply un-startable, and that has NEVER happened before. I’m dumbfounded at this turn of events.

If no command line switch, is there anything I can do to get this thing off the ground, so to speak? During the loading, I get past the “Will init ATC” message, then comes a resource loading message on qflite.png (opening that file in an image editor shows no evidence of corruption in that png.) After that, the Crash Reporter comes up and that’s it. No Safe Mode.

I know you don’t want bug reports posted here, and I have posted an official bug report through the proper reporting channel. I’m just looking for suggestions to get past this and back into the air, if possible.

    Thanks.

    1. There is a crash bug in beta 1. The fix is … beta 2. 🙂 There is no work-around for this…betas are going to be screwed up for some users some of the time.

  6. Bummer.
Am I looking at weeks, or do you have a handle on it for a near-term fix?
And thx for the reply, Ben. 🙂

    1. Days. But…understand, it’s beta. We don’t ever promise that a beta will work or be fun to use, or that crashes in betas will be cilcked quickly . Betas are out there to find bugs, not to have nice flights.

  7. Safe mode is a nice idea. But would it be possible to leave the settings that are displayed in the rendering options (and possibly elsewhere) at the old, screwed values (and also leave the pref files on disk alone), while actually using the defaults? That way, you could back down one setting a time until it no longer crashes, instead of rebuilding the prefs from scratch. At the moment, safe mode seems to be not much more than a nice UI for trashing the pref files.

    1. LOL that’s exactly what it is. 🙂 Let me see what I can do…having the sim operation in a state disjoint from its pref memory is awkward but certainly not impossible…

  8. Safe mode is killing me. I used to be able to use the simulator without a mouse. Now if I power off with the power button it comes back next time in safe mode.
